What a week

Where has the week gone…….and November too! It always seems to get quite hectic around this time of the year both on and off the farm. I won’t bore you with all of the details but it did involve catering for two functions; attending a Business Awards evening (I was nominated by persons known and unknown but wasn’t successful in taking home any ‘wins’); catching up on the backlog of jobs in the shop; attending our Landcare Network breakup……at which I was presented with a lovely gift for my years of service as the Treasurer……2 tickets on the Blues Train at Queenscliff…….and preparing for my Annual Christmas Sale (more details in another post so stay tuned) plus a dose of silage thrown in for good measure, all the while trying to sqeeze out as many hexagons as I could.

Okay after all of that I’m now back to tell you about a few of the goodies that I ordered at the recent AQM. Some of the items have already arrived while others will be a bit longer.

I ordered the new range from Fig Tree Quilts called ‘Buttercup’.

 
 
Although the full range isn’t due in the shop until February 2011, I do have Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes and Charm packs available now.

Also on order are another 8 bolts of the heavy weight fabric that I used in my Uni-Satch Bag. There are pink, white and blue florals and also a fantastic lime green floral…….especially for me!

In stock are the new iron-erasable marking pens for $12 each. Mark you design onto your fabric, stitch and iron it off.

My mind has gone blank ...... I know there is more to tell but I think the brain needs a rest so that's all for now.

Back to reality

Wow what a fantastic and speedy trip to Melbourne we had. Lenora and I headed off Friday morning and I can't believe how quickly the journey went..... can't even remember driving some of the roads......don't worry I was concentrating it was just we were talking so much! One of my first missions for the trip was to go to the DFO in Essendon and purchase some of the trophies for the Homecraft Pavilion for the 2011 Heytesbury Show........tick. Lenora even managed to make a start on her Christmas shopping. Then it was into the city to book into the Motel. You wouldn't believe it but we both booked our rooms weeks apart but I was in 1417 and Lenora was in 1423......just up the hall! I managed to sew a few hexagons while we chatted some more. News came thru that we got a pay rise from our milk company.........mmmm........maybe we could stay longer and shop some more.....lol! Off to dinner.....Mexican....yum.....no cooking or dishes even better........always makes it taste better. Back to get dolled up and off to see Hairspray.......I loved the movie and the production was fantastic. We both booked our tickets at different times and guess where Lenora was sitting.........two rows in front of me! I had E27 and she had C27........this is getting spooky! Lenora and I posed outside for a happy snap....

 
OMG look at my granny arms!.......I will have to start lifting weights to get rid of my chicken wings! Back to the motel and off to bed.......to sew hexagons that is not to sleep......I was well down on my daily quota but I wouldn't have traded the day for anything.

The AQM started at 8am the next morning so we hit the road for the short drive to the venue..........the streets are always quiet on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the city. The Show and Tell sessions were great, and then it was on to the buying........my favourite part.  I will keep those details for another post. Also caught up with lots of 'old' and 'new' faces which was lovely. The day seemed to be over in a flash, not before a trip to the supermarket on the way home to stock up on the supplies for a catering job for 100 people tomorrow night.......don't ask me how but we managed to squeeze all of the groceries into the VW! We had a relief milker in for the evening so I didn't have to milk....yay! It was a great 2 days away.....I don't think I have talked that much in ages.....lol!

Thelma and Louise......

Thelma and Louise are hitting the road…....leaving the country for the big smoke....…don’t worry we haven’t murdered anyone or broken the law....…..we are just leaving the cows, kids and hubbies behind while we spend 2 days in Melbourne. Shopping….out for dinner….go and see ‘Hairspray’…..a little sleepin…..then off to the AQM on Saturday. I will have lots to tell you in my next post about new purchases for the Shop and whether we are ever allowed to venture out again!

A reminder that the shop will be closed on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th due to our trip to Mexico Melbourne.

Hexagon Quilt Update - Week 31

Well here it is……….…the next stage of my Hexagon Quilt is complete….

the massive striped border. A little boring after 3,630 hexagons but it certainly looks good.

 
 
My tally now stands at 10,980, but I still have many more to do. Last week I decided to see how close to the mark Russell’s original estimate of 22,000 hexagons was. Well I was certainly glad I was sitting down when I did the final tally…….close enough to 27,000……yikes! I am never going to get it done…….unless I give up milking cows! So I will now concentrate on completing the next border and then re-access my time line. As the final border is comprised of approximately 10,500 hexagons I have a Plan B which might involve scaling the design back a ‘little’ to make the 1st May 2011 deadline.

Hope you have enjoyed this update on my progress....Russell says that I shouldn't be showing everyone and should keep it as a surprise......what do you think?

Good news.......I have more copies of 'Vignette' ready for new homes. As a special bonus I am including 2 skeins of Cosmo stranded thread with every issue.

 
I have also been busy bundling up lovely fat 1/4 bundles of Rosalie's 'Sweet Broderie' fabric.....which Leanne uses in her Block of the Month in 'Vignette' . The full range bundle (35 fabrics) which is valued at $192.50 is on sale for $170. I have also ordered the Lecein Basics used......but they haven't arrived yet.

The end of an era.

Tomorrow will be a day of mixed emotions for me as a special ‘relationship’ comes to an end. This relationship started 15 years ago in 1995 at a public meeting of local Landcare Groups which resulted in the formation of the Heytesbury District Landcare Network. From the original committee I am one of only four members still involved and over the years I have held many executive positions such as President, Secretary, and even Newsletter Editor……..but most importantly I have been the Treasurer for about the last 14 years. This came about when our Secretary / Treasurer passed away very suddenly and I offered to fill in until the AGM. Unfortunately I didn’t say until which AGM! I have seen the Network grow to what it is today…..a fantastic community driven group which has achieved a massive amount for our local environment. I have really enjoyed my time with the Network and made some lifelong friends through the Landcare movement. I have also seen young ‘green’ Landcare Co-ordinators come into the Network and then leave as mature young adults. Sometimes I have even felt like a ‘mother’ to them. However since I opened the Shop I have found it increasingly difficult to dedicate the time required to do the job properly. Not wanting to exit the job in the same manner as my predecessor, I gave my notice at the last AGM – 12 months and that’s it. As a voluntary position there were no takers….so the position was advertised as a paid role and the new Accounts Officer starts tomorrow. So I am sad that I have to finish up; frustrated that I didn’t have more time to be able to continue doing it; depressed that I have let people down; scared that the new person will do a better job and the Network will wish that they got rid of me sooner; pleased to get a corner of my loungeroom floor back (no more piles of paperwork); and happy because I will have more time to sew hexagons and garden and stitch and do housework…….other things.

It has been a big part of my life but I’m sure that they will manage without me!

People will start talking.....

about me and the delivery guy! He seems to be here every second day delivering all sorts of lovely things for the shop. I was so excited when he made a special delivery today that I nearly kissed him.....no not really but it was exciting. Six boxes of beautiful 'Sweet Broderie' fabric....yay! The first person I rang was Lenora........she has been waiting on some more of the fabric for her very special project.......we were like 2 excited school girls...lol! So after I rearranged the other fabric in the shop, I unpacked it and put it out. Doesn't it look fabulous?
