It has been a long time since I have done anything in the garden........that is apart from mowing the lawns and doing the occasional bit of 'weeding' with the roundup. My vegetable garden is almost unrecognisable, the roses are straggly, and the bush rats have decided that with my inactivity in the garden it would be a great place relocate to! With under two years before I have to have it spick and span for a wedding.....yes Emma & Ryan will be married in the garden.......exciting but there is so much that needs to be done......I finally made a start this afternoon. The hebes along near the carpark area have been in for about 4 years. They have been great.....very hardy.... but have started to look bare in underneath. So here is the before shot.
And then after I attcked them with the pruners.
I'm hoping that they will reshoot and in two years look fabulous....
that's plan A....if they don't plan B will be to rip them out and plant something else......be warned hebes it's grow or go!
While I was in the garden I took some photos of the last bit of colour before Winter sets in.....(or has it already?)
Although the hydrangea finished flowering months ago, the old blooms still add interest in the garden.
Still a few roses providing a last splash of colour....this one is Golden Touch
....yes I know there's a deadly nightshade plant in the background.....one of many!
The Alstroemerias are great and their blooms make excellent cut flowers.
There are still a few on this massive clump.......which I will have to divide up shortly. It is that big it has pushed itself up out of the ground and has formed a mound.
My favourite tree in Autumn is the Lipstick Maple.
It's brilliant red leaves really stand out and this is why I have planted another 5 in a lovely row further down in the garden. I'm afraid another windy day will see the last of the leaves gone for this Autumn.
So that the garden isn't completely bare of leafy trees during winter, two years ago I planted an Irish Strawberry Tree. I know that the grow rather large so it's good that I've got a big garden to accomodate it. It has lovely little bell shaped flowers which are followed by 'fruit' that look a little like strawberries.....well they are round and red.....but not edible (at least I don't think so). My tree is only about a metre high at the moment, but it has got flowers on it.
I really have missed spending time in my garden. It is good for the mind and body......maybe the body will take a bit of getting used to it though!
Linda :)
PS. I'm not sure whether the regulars noticed the new surface on the car park in the first photo......
Russell spent Monday and Tuesday ripping the red gravel base and smoothing out the 4 truck and trailer loads of scoria. Here's hoping that it packs down okay.......anything would have to be an improvement on the red gravel .....it was okay in the dry but very yucky when it rained.
