Anyone who has visited the shop will know that I have quite a large garden. I like to describe it as a work in progress and spend as much time as I can trying to maintain it. It has been difficult - between cows, shop and home.......especially last year when I spent so much time stitching hexagons. With the start of daylight savings.........yes I know some of you hate it but I really do like it........I spend a few hours after the evening milking in the garden. A couple of weeks ago I first spotted a new visitor to my garden. It was the Buff-banded Rail. A quiet bird about 30cm in size, who walks slowly with his tail raised and flicking constantly. I have tried several times to take a photo but when startled they dart quickly to cover. On Sunday I was working in the kitchen when I looked out the window and saw this fellow taking a stroll.....the camera was out.
There are 2 in the garden and my guess is that they are a pair. I googled and found some interesting facts about these birds.......one was about their habitat. Apparently they like dense reeds and vegetation.......does this mean I have created a wonderful habitat for these charming birds or does it mean that my garden is overgrown and weedy? I would say the later.......but what will I do.......maybe I will continue to work my way around the garden as I sure that there will always be 'dense vegetation' in my garden for them to hide!
Linda :)
Maybe I have them in my garden, I certainly fit the criteria.
